Square tooth sharpening

Like many I have heard and seen a bit about this method.

Bit of a dark art/years to learn etc.

So I was buying some files and saw this one and bought it a few months back.

 

Couple of stock 550s in everyday use, had an afternoon free so, without looking at any tutorials or the like got busy.

Now I don’t know if the edge will last, but it’s pretty fricking tasty in wood (this is spruce btw)

I was on my own so getting a vid was difficult so apologies for that.

I have always filed them from the outside in as apposed to conventional from the inside out .

I understand there’s different methods.

I just replicated what I do with the round file on a standard tooth.

Anyway, funny story.

I went down to order a few more of these files, turns out these are for sharpening circular saw blades, not square ground chainsaw teeth (no bevel on the edges)

 

But the 560 I just sharpened is fairly epic in wood so I’ll carry on using it for these chains and see how it goes.

Try the vallorbe diamond shape one, I can’t tell what you have there. Never really found a difference in from going inside to outside and vice versa.

hardwood is where it gets interesting!!

I saw the Vallorbe on the net whilst researching, this is a Stihl file btw.

I’m guessing this is exactly the same.

 

What happens in hardwoods? Gets a bit grabby?

Yes bit grabby and more vibes. 80-85 degree side plate angles work well in the hardwood.

personally I just use it for softwood applications, just annoying when you hit some shite those corners take some work to get them back

I'm really intrigued to try the square filing but this is what worries me, in domestic arb there is loads of shite to hit.

I found with a new file it was easy enough to change from a round file tooth to a square file.

But I wouldn’t argue with a forester on sharpening protocol!

Reckon I'll try on my 372, only 18" bar so not many teeth.
