Running a hgv

Sounds like a job for something like an eighteen tonner, you will need a mother of a crane to place loaded containers any distance other than next to the truck.May be better off with h5 type hook containers, you could do that with a ten tonner.

Either way, was I right about the regulation? MOT, tax and insurance only or do I need particular registration or anything else?

Yes you can drive an lgv on private tax class, its no different to the bigger horseboxes. It will still need plating though ,you may also struggle to privately insure a truck with a crane or hook loader . A privately registered lgv with a shipping containers on the back may also be a bit of a red flag for eagle eyed plod or DVSA.

When you say privately registered, do you mean taxed as private (class 10) or registered on the V5?

 

And what’s plating?

Plating is the MOT for a HGV  . It must comply to the " plate weight " that is on the plate riveted to the vehicle  If I remember correctly our 7.5 tonner ( horse box ) was once a year but a 10 tonner is every 10 weeks .
