How can I remove the door of a Scan Andersen 4-5 wood burning stove?

Recommended Posts

Thought it needed its own thread!

Thanks to chopperpete, I have successfully identified my wood burner! It's a Scan Andersen 4-5. But how do I get the door off?

There's a bolt at the bottom (see pic) but I don't know how to release it.

Any help much appreciated!

Any photo of the top hinge? I suspect the bolt you refer to is a type of grub screw ( Allen key head?) that locates in a grove on the uptight supporting pin. Removing that (plenty of WD40 over a few days) could allow the door to lift off the pins like a field gate.

no experience of this stove and I maybe spouting shite, nowt new there then.

I would say that the grub screw is holding the hinge pin in the hinge moulding on the door.

The pin itself looks like the top of it has been mushroomed so it won't fall through the hole if the grub screw loosens.

I would say WD40 and then try to lift the door whilst opening and closing the door. A bit of manipulation and I think the door will start to lift off...it may take a decent bit of wobbling to and fro whilst giving it a lifting motion but it should lift.

If you have a mapp gas plumbers torch, you could heat the hinge up a bit and add a bit of oil - it may catch fire so be prepared....the heat may help but try without first.

Thanks for your replies, woodworks, nopedigree and spudulike!

I attach a picture of the top hinge.

It might be hard to see the detail of the bolt at the bottom but it's quite smooth and round, with no discernible means to unscrew it.

I have given it a blast of WD40 as per recommendation.

I'm actually considering trying to glue in a new rope seal without removing the door! Recipe for disaster...?!

Apologies for my general ignorance but...

Is the grub screw in that hole beneath the hinge pin? Do I need to do something with this first to loosen the pin? Do I need to be sticking something into this hole?

Cheers in advance!

I think I'm beginning to understand - I need to stick an Allen key into that hole and loosen the grub screw, am I right?

Looking at the top hinge it ain’t going to lift off like a field gate…

is there a hole under the top hinge, if so does the top pin have an Allen key head too? Although I suspect the following..

Other thought is is the bottom pin mushroom headed ( flattened and made fatter like a rivet) like spud asked? If so it (the mushroom headed pin) must be able to be pulled out now the grub screw is out. Plenty of WD AND try twisting it using mole grips.

if that don’t work or even before trying fit the rope on the door as is. Get the right diameter rope and rope glue and hold it in place with plenty of masking tape for a day or so.

good luck

I was thinking it might go down first now the grub screw is out, dislocate from the top hinge and then lift.

Else use more oil and screwdriver under the bottom hinge pin mushroom head

I would leave well enough alone and glue the rope in with the door on, maybe with a clamp or two starting at the top.
