And this one, why bother cutting into rounds in the first place!

Just quarter them with a saw, Stand the ring up and cut with the grain, it wont take long with a sharp saw, then on to your small splitter ,,

Maybe I am just a bit stubborn, but I go for a large splitting maul and elbow grease on most occasions.   If I am still blowing after 20 odd hits then I get the saw out.  I look at it as a w

Or just go at the round with the axe, flaking splits from the edge. If it's straight grained stuff that technique can work fine
