HONDA 24hp V-TWIN problem

I have the same engine in my chipper but I cant help with your problem cos I've never had an ounce of trouble with it. It does backfire when the revs are dropped though but all the little Honda engines do that.

After reading your post again I see you had it running on a gentle slope, could there be too much oil in the sump and some has got into pot 2 ?

Mine pops when you back off the throttle, think this is normal. If it had the wrong plugs fitted at service,I would take it back to service depot & get it on record, and get them to fit the right ones. Also clean the fuel system and replace the filter.

Hope you get it sorted.

Different engine (kohler twin v) but exact same problem.

The result was a blown gasket on the intake manifold connected to the cylinder with the plug fouling problem.

You really need to do a compression test or better still a leak down test to check the valves, head gasket rings etc.

Look for blown head and intake gaskets before you start stripping carbs down which imo I doubt is the problem, the carb should/would affect both cylinders i would of thought.

As the problem is only on one cylinder its not fuel. Check the ht lead is not shorting somewhere along its length. when you checked the spark it may have been put in a slightly different position so not reproducing the problem.

Where both plugs wrong at service? You are looking for a fault only on C2 so anything that has been done to both sides is unlikely to be the problem

Cheers again - keep the suggestions coming - I've had one or two from other sites - will copy below. Am going to strip the thing down this week and fully intend on eliminating the problem and / or weak component. I only have a diesel compression tester so will have to go get a cheapo gunsons spark-ignition thing or tother.

Here's a repsonse from a Honda mechanic - still a little vague:

There is most likely a problem with the valves. (If this unit has hydraulic lifters, then disregard this next particular part of the answer.)

If your engine has mechanical valve lifters, most likely you need to have the valves adjusted. There should be approximately .004" clearance between the valve stems and the rocker arm when the valve is completely open. In order to check the valve clearances, you will need to remove the rocker arm covers. These valves need to be adjusted about every two years, also. They can get mis-adjusted much sooner. Sometimes fairly soon after purchase.

A compression test should also give you a good idea if there is a compression problem. Compression should not be more that 10lbs more on one side than the other.

Hydraulic lifters do not need to be adjusted.

Another possibility that can cause a lack of compression is a valve keeper that may have come off.

It is also a possibility that a connecting rod could have broken if it only runs on one cylinder.

Most likely it is not an ignition problem since you have tested the spark and got spark on both plug wires. If everything else checks out ok, then there is a slight possibility that the coil could be working intermittently and would have to be replaced. But make sure that everything else is ok, first before you replace the coil.

Check to make sure you do not have bad fuel or water in the fuel also.

If you don't feel comfortable with this kind of repair I would suggest sending it to a reputable shop.
