Pull start on 572XP

Anyone able to give me some advice on a starting problem on my Husqvarna 572XP please.  The pull of the starter became rough when cranking over.  I took the starter cover off and no surprise, found a broken pin on the two pins which engage the pawls on the flywheel.  I assumed this was the problem and replaced the plastic unit (see pic).  There was still a rough action with some resistance in the full pull (and another one of the pins quickly got damaged).  I'm now thinking I may have a problem upstream from the hand start components, (or wonder whether some original broken pins/plastic have got caught somewhere).  Any ideas welcome to rule out anything basic I might be able to fix myself.  Thanks.

Check to see if the broken bit of pin is not stuck behind the fly wheel .

If its not a heated handle saw there will be no magnets under the flywheel, the magnet will be on the side of the flywheel and you should be able to see enough of it to see if the pin is about, i assume the scarring on the nut is where the pin came out? there a burr i can see on one of the starter pawls as well, if you intend removing the flywheel there is a puller , or drift required, there is also a flywheel holding tool, i hate putting something through the spark plug hole on top of the piston, however there is a plastic tool available for this, make sure when you refit the flywheel that the key is correctly lined up with the slot in the crankshaft, if you shear the key it will be a new flywheel.

Tighten nut to 23NM

Take the plug put and see if the flywheel/crank spins freely. If it does...are you using the decomp valve? If you don't use it, this damage will occur more often having sen it on 560s before. Other than that, when starting, pull the recoil handle lightly against the compression of the engine before pulling the handle rather than yanking it in any position as it may be the initial slip and slam in to the pawls doing the damage.

Not sure there is much to gain in pulling the flywheel off if it isn't an XPG unless you suspect the broken pin is behind it - bit of a job for a novice without a puller!!

Thanks - "a novice without a puller" is quite an accurate description of me I think.  I know what you mean though in terms of engaging the pawls before giving it much of a tug.  Also yes I always use the decomp when cold.  I was wanting to eliminate anything obvious but think I may be getting above my basic only, knowledge and service equipment.  Thanks again.
