What fid

Any advice on what fid set to buy? About to start learning to splice trex hollow braid of all diameters. 
 

I have seen Selma fid set. Is that any good?

 

also what needle and thread do I need to lock stitch? Thanks

T rex is great to splice, i found the approx 16mm and 18mm really easy. I used a metal coat hanger as a fid, there's so much room inside it passing a fid up is dead simple.

 

I uses Marlow whipping twine no 4 and smith and son sail makers needles. Cost about £13 for both.

T rex can be spliced with a biro or a bent coat hanger as stated but a Selma fid would work well too. The trick is tapering the ends to a kind of bullet and taping it really well. 

 

You can get any sail makers needles from ebay or a local chandlers. Most important thing to go with them is a sail makers palm and a pair of flat pliers for pulling the needle through. Most whipping twine is fine although if you're splicing big fat hollow braids, you could probably get away with using throwline
