Mobile processor for oversize ash nr york

Morning all,

Does anyone know of anyone operating a large mobile processor in northern england? I've been grading out all the timber too big for our processor this summer and there will be 60 ton now I should think. It's all ash and ranges from 12" up to 30". My digger man has a lasco splitter that we could break it up with then put it through our processor but I'm not that keen.

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

I'd say the cone splitter on the digger then through your own machine will be the cheapest and least work overall.

Might be worth contacting fuelwood as they used to hire out a Splitta 400. I had one in once and its fantastically productive with the right sized wood. It will take up to 16" rings and you can noodle your  30" rings in half to fit.

 

We needed 2 guys on saws and loading to keep it fed and another to move the crates. Think we filled a crate in 5mins and this is nice small well split logs for dinky stoves

You could be right but I don't think it'll be easy. When the lengths are split into quarters they won't roll on the log deck for example.

Suggested options:
1. Cone splitter then the 3m sections through processor.

2. Cut into 1m lengths/split with reasonably fast vertical or horizontal splitter to <15cm dia, stack billets/pre season then sell as 1m billets or put through processor when seasoned/light enough to manually lift and cut to required log lengths.

 

Don’t know of anyone with mobile equipment large enough to process those oversized logs.

Nothing about oversize timber is easy unfortunately, that's why processor grade commands a premium.

We've been doing option 2 during the summer when the forwarder operator (me) has accidentally put an oversize on the trailer and its not economical. At least with the cone splitter option its all mechanised.

I have to deal with everything thats felled, this year it was a 10 acre piece of ash clearfell. Upside is its always good to tell the customers all our logs are ash!
