How close to plant new tree

Hi guys

We have a Norwegian Maple Tree on our front drive. The drive is not very big at all but I want to plant another tree next to it, we are massive fans of the shade and benefits trees have to the environment. What tree species is best to plant next to the current maple do you think? What tree species fares well close to another tree? I think I literally have 10 feet to play with.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards

George.

Off the top of my head how about Aesculus pavia?  A more appropriate size and shape for your plot.

Or a large shrub that needs hard pruning to get the best from it - lilac, deutzia, philadelphus...
