Whilst there are many sage comments above, I’d suggest there is a factor - a very relevant one - which has been over looked. 
 

It’s not so much that “we” don’t know the cost / value of stuff. But rather that there are (probably millions) of folk that really don’t. 
 

Buy something for a tenner, stick it online for a ton, pretty much guarantee some mug will buy it. 
 

Nevermind stagflation / inflation / QE etc, etc, etc. 
 

A fool and their money are (and have always been) easily parted - tinterweb and cheap shite from China has simply super charged it.
