You need a device that can produce vacuum as well as pressure - most use Mityvac but you can use home cobbled gauges and brake bleeding kits/bicycle pumps if smart enough.

You basically plug all the engine orifices and then push air or draw out depending which test you are doing. Most will use a modified spark plug with a tube down the middle of it or you can feed air in through the impulse connector on some machines.

Probably easier to give it to someone that can do the tests.

Some plug the orifices, put pressure in to the engine and then dump it in a bath of water - better clear that one with the other half before trying it, especially if they are in it at the time!!

I had in mind that it was a chainsaw but am now thinking it may be a brush cutter.

 

I think it is a chain saw Steve, it could be a 254, or a 345, or anything I guess, if it is a 345 as you know it’s a clam shell design and the bearings sit inside the seal.

Removed flywheel and clutch for a better look, then could not reseal to get enough pressure to test. Thought it was exhaust seal so changed inner tubes to no avail. Dunked it in bath(without wife) and realised decomp valve had come depressed!

On closer inspection is leaking around outside of bearings, not along the shaft, so lower seal with plastic appears to be the problem.

Pleased how clean the piston and cylinder are. Just hope I can keep it all that way!

So it is a clamp shell design, the main bearings are supplied sitting inside a carrier which also incorporates the crank seal, you can buy just the seal and carrier but to try and press the bearing into them is a real pain in the ass, the cylinder is sealed to the crankcase with gasket cement, so machine apart , new bearings with seal and re seal the bottom end, as the crankcase/ oil tank are composite check the area where the bearings sit, if there are signs of melting or distortion you could have bigger issues trying to seal it, there should be no need to put seal ent around the bearing carrier.
