Just how many of the general public will know about wet v dry humidity readings when on here it is a struggle?

Or the trade or was I alone in my ignorance?

You're a joiner so would have been used to measuring dryness on a dry weight basis. The chips in the devices are probably all the same so it would be sellers of meters for the fuelwood trade that are at fault for not pointing out the difference.

I don't think many of the public are aware of any change in regulations at all. Some are vaguely aware that the government are banning woodburners, which I think came from a Mail headline when they started talking about restricting firewood sales.

Just for a laugh I searched for a supplier in the woodsure directory, nearest are 36 miles south or 40 miles north. Not a massive take-up there yet as I'm sure there are plenty of suppliers closer.

And care even less as long as the logs they get burn OK.  And who can blame them?
