Our first attempt at coronet-cutting…..

This was our first proper attempt at coronet cutting and fracture pruning. As you can see there is extensive decay at the stem base coupled with severe fire damage (bless the little darlings :sneaky2:). I’ve already removed one Oak which stood close-by a few years ago and really didn’t want to fell this old girl (there is a footpath within falling distance of the tree).

What do you think?

Climber was Matt, Tom put the bat box in and I was groundie/camera man. :001_smile:

dont know much about it john except from what dave puts up, the rip cuts must of been a bit scary, mat did well. I reckon she will still throw out a lot of growth and you wont be able to see your work in a few years, i really want to give it a go, i have taken down loads of oaks in woods that this could of been done, well done

Cheers Stevie. I can’t imagine we’ll be doing it very often, but in this setting, on this tree it just seemed right to give it a go. I agree with you on Matt – Top Job! The tree was odd when the large stuff was coming down (it hardly moved) yet when Matt was climbing it you could see the twist of the main stem in the crown – very un-nerving!
