The main thing is the series of cuts blow the hinge on the side you want thee wood to collapse slightly making the tree pivot around before it tips to the deck  .

I think I see what you mean but for the tree to collapse the cuts the weight would need to be over them??

There is shed loads of weight up there , If you make one part of the supporting weight less robust than the other part its going to squash down .  Your best bet is to google " Soft Dutchman " on you tube .

There are some diagrams in Beraneks book.

I don't see a reason for it other than you've already cut the gob and then you notice something to miss so try to steer it round a bit. Otherwise why not just cut the gob pointing the way you want it to go?

Coz its leaning against the direction of fall .
