Tree Planting- Auger or Bucket

I've got a pump that would be able to handle it. It just means going and starting the pump and running the system for a while each time it's dry. Question is, in the winter, how often do they need watering?

In winter very little rain will usually be enough  and during the summer a lot but only once twice a week to encourage the roots to grow and search for water

Yes. Well mulched, in hot summer the soil will not dessicate ( it's top 300mm of soil fr yr roots we talking abt) always neglected by local athority planting ! Went to Hyde Hall RHS gardens this year n their new tree planting had almost completely failed, No Mulch.  K

Auger and bucket for me.    Auger the hole and lift it out without rotation to prevent smearing and a bucket full of two year old oaks has given a good result on a clay loam with no mulch.

Easiest and fastest method I know.
