Dutch elm disease

We have some large elm trees which are dying of ded, they will have to be felled soon. We would like to replace them with a more resilient strain of elm. Firstly any recommendations of elms we could replace with and second what would we need to do with the ground/ soil before replanting ? The existing elms are 150 years old and about 80+ ft tall

Where abouts are you?

I bought 2 english elms (ulmus procera) but they also had ulmus minor and ulmus glabra I think don't know if they will have any left now I'll try and find the garden center for you.

What type of elm have you got?

Resistance to Dutch Elm Disease has recently been discussed in another thread.  It seems Ulmus Lutuce is a very good choice.

Are you having the old elms milled?  It is usually very beautiful timber.

We will be milling some of the timber but a lot will have to be burned.  Thanks Dave

why does it "have to be burned", ???

 

if you have too much wood advertise it on woodturning and woodworking groups on facebook or other turning forums.

 

considering how little elm there is left in the UK it would be a shame to waste it.
