Should I keep my Dolmar 153 for milling

Hi all, 

 

this is my first post but I’m a long time reader, anyway hoping for a bit of advice regarding my Dolmar 153 I’ve recently acquired. It’s in fairly good shape and runs well, I bought it with the hope of using it for occasional milling. However I’m now thinking perhaps running an older saw like this for this purpose is a harsh way to treat it especially when considering parts availability. Would I be better buying a new saw? Or at least newer? I’m considering the makita 7900, ok this is only 79cc but the price new is very good and given I’m talking occasional occasional milling maybe could be a good choice? So which way to go, Dolmar 153 I’ve already got or sell and find a bit more cash and get the makita or something else maybe? Any thoughts and advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Billpierce thanks for the reply your probably right and give the 153 a go just didn’t want to stress the saw as although in excellent working order is an old girl now and parts are hard to find. Air filters for example, I’ve only the one and there a couple of micro holes in it, ok I could effect a repair but ideally I would have several filters for milling. Anyway I’m still in two minds

Ha yeah that’ll do it! Don’t wanna wreck mine will have to piss of the misses an wreck hers, anyway your both right I’m just gonna get on with it

I have an old Dolmars with holes in the air filter filled with hot melt glue, dab each side of the hole to make a plug. Been fine a few years.

Don't run it with holes, mine also has a new piston due to the scoring caused by previous owners evidently not noticing/caring.

I ran a Dolmar 112 as only saw for a bit, found you can get parts but it can take a while so it became frustrating. If you will have no time pressure on occasional milling then should be fine.

Are you a man or a mouse. What bar are you using on it to mill ?
