Woodburner smells could it be 5" to 6" pipe

Recommended Posts

Hi,I have a Dru44 Multifuel woodburner and wondered if anybody could help me with a problem I've had for years...I have even changed my woodburner but still the problem persists.Fire starts with no problems but once hot it starts to smell not smoke or backdraft etc....I then have to open the fire door and let it cool down a bit as closing the air intake takes far too long.. wondered if I should change all the pipe to 6"? The Dru is designed for a 5" which is what I have coming out the top but then it changes to 6" double walled after about 6ft which carries on to the roof.

Thank you

What sort od smell? Ours smells hot metallic for the first burn of the year, in the summer after heavy rain you can get a slightly tarry aroma but is helped by leaving the door slightly open. If it is smoky then it is to do with warming the chimney to increase draft.

If you use any type of white spirit, turps, WD40, tung oil etc in the house, the log burner will drag this air in and make it smell heavily of kerosene, I have had that if I have really shitty chainsaws to clean in the garage even though the workshop is 25 feet away behind two closed doors. If it is this then open a window in the same room as the log burner and it will go away fast. That is if the room doesn't have an external vent if a 4.7KW type.

It's hard to describe the smell..I guess it is like a very hot metal smell.I clean it regularly as well.I used to have a bigger stove 11kw (which had the same problem with the same smell) which I installed a vent for but this one is a 7kw.It's designed for a 5" pipe but as I mentioned it goes from 5" to a 6" pipe after a 6ft or so and I wondered if that might be creating the problem?

One last thing I'm burning 80% smokeless coal with just a bit of starter wood, stick:)

Thanks for your reply

I had this problem when new log burner replaced installer removed damper from the chimney said it was not requied / allowed can’t remember. Depending on which way the wind was fire just got too much draft and smelt one day came into the room to see it glowing red in places,

reinstalled damper never had a problem since

Hi,I do have a damper on the box itself at the bottom below the coal line and with it being a multi fuel wood/caol burner it also has an air intake above the glass window to allow for burning of wood which is kept closed when I burn smokeless coal....My one question that I can't seem to get an answer to is whether I should change the 5" pipe which extends into a 6" pipe about 6ft  after it comes out of the woodburner? It's designed for a 5" initially and max output is 7kw.

Thanks for getting in touch:)

Hi there, it may be worth getting a Flue thermometer to see if you are running at the correct temperature. It has three stages to show where you should be. When mine gets slightly too warm I get a smell which is hard to explain but I put it down to the stove being really warm. But slow the the fire down and it goes away. With regards to your flue, if I am looking at your photographs right you have a 5” single wall flue going to a 5” twin wall flue which has a outside diameter of 7” (approx) this is still 5” internal with 1” of insulation. Have you check the smell is not coming from anything around it once it gets warm? Paint, wood?
