Hi folks,

Any idea what’s up with this poor fella? After some fruitless (sorry) Googling, I’m wondering if anyone can help me identify the problem(s) with this? Assuming it’s fungal, hence the post in this group. Appreciate any suggestions to identify and/or deal with this.

Cheers

Ben

according to the previous owners its apple or pear. Either way, it’s looking pretty sad. Strange shape branches and all black and gnarly.

I see, yes canker by the looks of it. Normally one would have to cut it all out. The tree doesn't look too unhealthy, but you don't want canker on a fruit tree.

What tree is he? Some sort of fruit tree, cherry? It looks like canker of some sort from the photos that what I can see.

The orange bits look like frass from the exit holes of a boring insect, which will be secondary to whatever is affecting the tree.

I would of said the left tree is an Apple and the one in question is a cherry, like openspaceman said it’s an insect of some sort causing the holes and sawdust around them. Hard to say really but I would probably leave it until the autumn re balance it and give it another year to see what happens, or remove and replant if it’s not to important to them
