Beautiful trees, guys. Monkeyd, do you know the history of the tree in the first picture? Storm damage, lopped off by the Saxons, or what?

Dave

Hey Dave,

the Oak is on my patch at work.

It was hit really hard, then "tidied up" in our infamous storm back in 1987, 2 years after I started working there.

I've regretted ever since, not photographing it before it lost it's crown.

Can't find any old shots or paintings of it on the net, as it was pre digital.

The re-establishment of the new canopy, is seemingly well attached and has withstood subsequent storms in it's isolated position, and should see this old tree on for a good few decades yet.

I have an unproved (as yet) theory, that this may be an Armada Oak, as there were Oaks planted in commemoration on the highground sites, next to where the Armada Beacons were lit, to alert of the oncoming Spanish fleet in 1588.

But this is probably just some unsubstantiated romantic claptrap.

Works for me.

My wife was there in the spring of 1988 and remembers the devastation of the trees in the countryside.

I am most interested in the advance of the decay; how much was present prior to the event, that sort of thing.

David that is a super set of photographs, as usual. Thanks for posting. One doesnt generally 'stop to look' as it were, whilst driving round the same trees day to day, yet seeing such beautiful sets of the same tree(s) makes me want to take more notice of individual trees at different times of the year.

What, if anything in particular, triggered the taking of repeated photos of certain trees? A desire for a record/ work related/ favourite trees you see regularly etc etc?:001_smile:
