No, you want to be able to replace it after its broken so hammer might be overdoing it!!

 

Pair of pliers I think. It had just seized up and wouldn't open/close freely. So we forced it open and re fitted it.

 

Try the bowl of water trick first, and wd40 and anything else to free it up, but if you get it open you need to know that its capable of closing again or you'll have troubles in the winter. If you get it runnign ok I would still suggest fittign a new one.

Brill, I'll have a go at all that then and see how it goes. Still think it's a bit odd the gauges in the red still when it's not running a is real cold - it's covered in snow at the mo! Thanks for the advice chaps

Thats the whole point though! If the thermostat is stuck closed the temp gauge will show high cos it is connected to the thermostat!

 

 

 

The only other reason would be head gasket troubles but that would go into the red slower, so you better hope its not that. Thermostat is a cheap and easy fix.

No oil in water or vica versa, thermostate's opening ok, just gauge is Reading hi even when not running. When running it still says it's hi when it's not? Strange hey! Can't find where the temp switch is to unplug it? Think it's garage time tomorrow. Ta for help though fellas

Sounds more like an electrical problem, like the gauge circuit is shorting out. As a first step, find the sender and unplug that, then check the gauge. If it reads hot, there's a short in the circuit feeding the gauge, or a fault with the gauge; if no movement, then perhaps the sender is shorting internally.
