I dont see how the square chain is any sharper!

 

With a round file you can get a thin edge on the top and side plate but I dont see how this happens with a square one.

 

I must be missing the point since the info points to exactly the opposite of what I am saying.

I suspect its just a simple thing of market forces, not a real demand over here. The forestry/arb market in this country is very small compared to the States/Canada.

To be honest I know nothing about square ground cutters, but I stumbled upon this "ATOP filing guide" and wondered if anyone knew why you would grind cutters square instead of round.

I think,reading Petes link, that the square ground would be harder for many to maintain a good edge, the round being more forgiving for beginners/students and those not so adept at sharpening, and given the minimal gains, probably hardly worth bothering with anyway.
