New boots hurt

I read somewhere that "traditionally" the new recruits to the FFL, bought the red wine for their new squad mates, who reciprocated by pissing in the recruits new boots. To be worn the next day.

I simply boiled a kettle and filled my TA boots at night, then tipped the water out the next morning and wore them, over 2 pairs of socks.

Nary a worry.

Edit;

From hazy recall I understand the theory was that since urine was used in curing the leather it should help, plus urine being sterile it should help with any blisters or cuts.

How sterile the urine of a hairy-arsed/time served  FFL was is probably questionable though.

Simple solution fr new boots. Have a bath- chuck yr boots in after n leave to soak.  Put them on in the morning with carrier bags over yr socks n wear em till dry. Like buckskin :) k

Best solution, ever Khriss. I used to soak them, pack them with balled up newspaper,  soak them again and go for off to work with them soaking wet. Need a thick pair of socks though to stop the feet suffering too much. Another old way was to leave them in the horse muck pile in the stables for a month or so to soften up. Stank like buggery for a while, though!

You can by army surplus pre worn boots . I bought a pair of German army boots once that were perfectly broken in ( still have them as it goes ) . really comfy .

Those German boots are bombproof, continental soles if I remember right. The Argentine soldiers had them in The Falkands, until the British guys nicked them off em.
