Tree survey info recording

Hi there.

Looking for some advice on how to collect tree data electronically. Mostly for BS5837 and standard tree reports such as health and risk.

At the moment I record data on paper and type it up afterwards which is tedious.

I seen a thread before on this but can't find it now. Thank you in advance.

Online tools for forms. Jot form etc. Very flexible n instant access. Not massive money neither. Look into those - bound to be something. K

I use a toughbook, with an excel document to record the survey info. I got shown how to do it by chris Simpson of informed tree services. He does training up here in Scotland. AA are running one of his sessions in Sept in Stirling.

I use a samsung tablet, was inexpensive compared to a tough book, has worked pretty well and certainly saves some time, i do normally have to spend an hour or 2 back on the computer editting the table and text as the transfer of files from tablet to computer has a few glitches which need cIeaning up. I managed to drop the tablet in a river as well at the start of a survey. I put it on the river bank and it sledged down into a small river with me desperately trying to slide tackle it, the inevitable happened, tablet fully submerged and myself up to my knees, but amazingly the tablet worked absolutely fine after.

Think ahead. Software is more important than hardware, but choice of software may restrict choice of hardware. Report is likely to have text, a spreadsheet of data and a plan of location and spreads. 2 and 3 can be generated from suitable software. I use Pocket GIS, which allows you to design your survey template then use it as many times as you want to collect tree data. It then lets you upload the data as a spreadsheet, which in run can be imported into a CAD-type mapping programme. I use PT Mapper which is a bit irritating for anything out of the ordinary, but quick and simple.

Choice of device is a matter of personal choice, tablets have better screen size but I use Trimble Geo and Juno because they are indestructible and small and with a stylus they are better in the cold and wet.

I like the look of the Samsung Active 2. Have always used Samsung so would be familiar. Also I tend to use excel for most reports so this could work. Anyone used these?
Thanks for the feedback.

So do you use excel to get the field data and use that in report accompanied with a microsoft word type report?

I normally use excel for the tree survey schedule after changing it to a print friendly format. The main report I just do in word. I figure if I could do the bulk of the excel information on site it would cut down the office time. I appreciate that there are probably easier ways but in my case I think I would be cutting the work load somewhat.
