Dan’s 044 is now back up and running. The mystery breather turned out to be a vacuum valve for the automatic choke mechanism. If anyone else has this problem, the later cylinder without the extra pulse feed will work, but you need the carb, throttle and choke linkages to go with it. In this case, cleaning up the cylinder, and dropping in a meteor piston worked well!! This model has two pulse feeds, one for the fuel pump, and one for the auto choke. A new one on me, and I’ve pulled plenty of saws down over the years!!

Had enough time to take a vid of my own 044 today. This is nearly bone stock. Just a timing advance and a few more holes in the rear cover. Unported.

Sweet! Hopefully thats how mine will behave once i’ve gone through her! [emoji106]

I’ve got a 044 and when I pull the starter handle it almost rips my arm out the socket, I’ve had the saw going many times without trouble but now it’s playing up.

Ive had for 20 years and it’s still in very good condition and I would like to keep it as it is a work horse, any ideas on whether I could sort the problem out myself or should I get it in to the local dealers for repair.

It is possible the key on the flywheel has sheared but more likely that opening up the gap from coil to flywheel may sort it out. Basically your ignition timing has changed slightly and the saw is trying to fire a little earlier causing the kickback. The flywheel key, coil gap, coil malfunction and sometimes a plug gap being lower than spec will effect ignition timing.

That for the reply Spud, I guess I could try working on the flywheel first and see how I get on, the spark plug is new with the correct gap setting so it would be the flywheel or the coil gap.

I can always take it in for repairs, if you was closer I would have brought it too you. Paul Tomo
