Ten years isn't that long in tree terms though. 

 

I'm in accord that bad specifications should come with some liability but I can't see that happening. Any defect that is outwardly apparent to inspection comes back to the inspector/owner. So if the causal pruning causes failure, due to the arising decay, then  a lack of an adequate inspection regime would probably absolve the initial creator of the spec.

Why wouldn’t you want the job of removing them in ten years?

I was thinking about climbing past decay in the stem to dismantle the tops. If there's a nice clear field in front so you can fell them in a oner though, would be a great job.

There isn't it is a back garden and they want to make it nice underneath..

Have you tested them for decay? Use a nylon hammer. Submit an application for removal and take it to appeal if you have it refused.
