Are these trees dying? :/

Hello all,

 

i come to this forum in need of some help! i am a new homeowner in the United States. I have 6 "big" trees right on the front edge of my yard. Not sure what kind, so i have attached a photo of the bark in hopes someone can help ID the tree and the issues they may be experiencing. They are probably 18-24" across and about 90' tall. The question i have is this: 

 

based on the photos i have attached, are you able to tell me if these trees are dying? The primary branches are all dying and no longer growing leaves. There are some secondary shoots growing on some of the branches. My concern is that they are dying and i will need to take them down :( What do you guys/gals think? They are about 50' from my house, so i will need to bring them down if they are in fact dying trees.

 

Any help would be much appreciated.

A decent picture of a leaf/branch would help with  id trees, they do look half dead.

Could be ash with ash die back. However it would be good to see the leaf

Leave & bark doesn't look like ash, also its the USA.....

Looks like ditch elm disease do they have that in the USA?

Leaves  wrong shape for elm maybe a maple or oak?
