Has anyone tried installing an urban tree pit system?

These are our attempts at two for York City Council, quite a daunting task when you’ve not done it before and have to wing it! End result was pleasing though.

Hi Gary, the client is doing a refurb on a few main tourist streets in York, the spec includes some urban street planting, it involved excavating 2x2 metre pits, these pits were full of assorted services so tree pits and raft structures needed to be installed. The pits make the trees grow downwards and remove the risk of the pavement being disrupted in the future. A bit of a steep learning curve for us and in one of the busiest tourist streets in York.

I've had to smash the metal grate out of a tree before stump grinding.

Ive found old cast iron tree guards buried in estate tree stumps on several occasions, new teeth required

I had to quoate for a system a while ago , blooming expensive I thought and of course daunting . Brilliant idea and should be utilised in many urban environment and in the long term a saving . Would love to know how much that lot was and if I was far out on price .

Am I the only person that doesn't understand this, if there are services below the pit won't they get damaged as the tree grows downwards?

 

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick again?

Nope because the walls of the pit go down below the services.the roots will carry on past them.
