What stops it sliding backwards?

My brute strength.

No pile on mine. It does sink 6” or more in soft woodland soil but it’s not a practical problem

The base has a convex shape to facilitate grip

Stack on edge or vertically until the free water has dried to prevent sticker marks later. Then normal stacking to air or kiln dry. I would seal the ends irrespective of weather. In my experience it can be really prone to insect attack so borax or debark it as well.

Can be absolutely lovely wood but it isn't very durable. Not sure how long it will last as garden furniture.

Cheers. I know it’s not durable but I wanted to do something with it

Most disappointing tree-fail video ever ! You can clearly see he knew what he was doing  - an wasn't even aiming for collapsing that wooden stunt-shed he placed there ! Pah ! ;) k

I missed the overhead cables as well and only put a dent in the grass and not the tarmac. I could do this for a living

do I seal the ends straight away or after stacking on end?

Keep away from the elements asap.
Sycamore is susceptible to water staining.
And fresh pva is water soluble be warned!
I've made both these mistakes.
