Just out of interest, was the Ivy cut? at least severed at the base?

If not it is highly likely that on being freed from light supression this Ivy will swamp any potential regrowth from the oak. I have seen this all too often, and why was it pollarded?

Nope, the Ivy wasn’t severed at the base, to be honest I wouldn’t expect a tree of that age and condition to recover anyway. As it stands the Oak will now provide an excellent source for habitat for the local wildlife with the added bonus of not killing anyone (there is a footpath directly behind it) or damaging property.

It was ‘pollarded’ because the base was extensively hollow, made worse by severe fire damage. The end weight in the crown was marginal but the sail area was a cause of concern.
