Advice on what to do with old oak

Hi all,

We have this tree in our garden and would like some advice on what to do with it. Is it safe to leave as is or should it be felled?

 

Advise much appreciated.

It will quite likely stand for years to come, but a reduction would be prudent.  What targets are there the other side of the fence?

If I were you, I'd get a suitably competent person to provide you with an independent assesment of the tree and to provide you with management recommendations.  Where are you based?

Can't see in that photo, but if there is any target for it to fall on which you would want to be covered by insurance eg a house then it is worth checking your policy as the competent independent assessment may be a requirement.

 

A friend who had a poplar fall was not covered as he had no QTRA, he didn't have any idea there was such a thing as a quantified tree risk assessment before.

Definitely needs somebody qualified to see this in person and to draw up a management plan. Theres a lot of weight and height  for a tree with that amount of decay to support so would need a reduction in size in my opinion but as I said get somebody to come and look at it.

Seen worse still standing.  I agree from the photos it looks like it needs a reduction though at the best.  Some trees just have to be assessed in person though, not on a forum
