Why would it grow like this?

The Butt of the Tree looks a bit like a bottle.

Where the natural stem taper is altered due to compensatory thickening around localised decay

.

Why can't that man ever say something to which I can reply "Yeah - I knew that." ?

And why does it have to be annoyingly interesting?:confused1:

Keep it coming, Monkey D!

I dont want to derail the thread......I have to agree that it may indeed be a meristematic disruption whilst at the same time saying it looks typical of the ol' bottle butt.

The reason for my post? I reckon that planes are predisposed to exhibit stem taper that is not typical. ( ie...they more often than not have generous proportions at the base) Sorry David...purely anecdotal you understand.

Hi, I,ve read somewhere that there are a number of distinct clones of Plane dating back to the 18th C. P.X acerifolia Augustine Henry has a very straight trunk up to 6m ish and the Baobob plane which probably carries a virus, there are a number of others but with no name or the name has been lost. Queens square in Bristol has many fine Planes dating from the late 18th C. and the variation in growth patterns are quite pronounced.
