My splicing attempts

I've worked on a couple now and I don't like them much - it's interesting I suppose, but I find it hard work and at the end you've got what looks like a lop-sided eye splice!

I admit that I got better as I practiced the splice - temporarily taping groups of strands etc. - but still find it murder to include the jacket in the final bury.

I've seen Drew B's work on kernmantle and he seems to make it look easy!

The cover included in the final bury?

Instructions just say to cut it off short, I had to bury the core in groups of three to get them in, I also used a wire fid for that part.

I agree! Until I read a post on here, by Drew, showing his splice with the cover buried.

I don't think it was LSK, but it was kernmantle.

I'll try to find the post.

Not even Nick Araya made the Fly look pretty, onelab, I cut the first attempt off and restarted afresh, that made it easier, try it and I will try and help.

Thanks for the replies WeeDee and High Scale. I will attempt it one day and hopefully get it destroyed to see what the splice holds up to.

In my mind it just doesn't seem like a kernmantle splice will retain as much of the rope strength as a class 1 or 2 does on db's. I may be completely off the mark though.

Has anyone any experience of breaking the fly?

No - but Rich H. reckoned it melted too easily.

ha, rich can do a fly -2 -eye. incredibly short fly splice that bafflers me how he does it! tucking the cover back into the throat does weaken the splice a tad i believe but does give a smoother finish. i hated how the splice would look like its pulled open when retrieving a rope guide etc

The Slaice is the best option for this rope i believe, its a very clever solution to the problematic splice
