Saw doesn't sound right

Good evening, taking the opportunity to chop some logs today reminded me to ask this. For a while now my MS181 has sounded tinny when it runs though I can't remember what it sounded like when new - is that a normal sound for this saw or would it indicate a problem I need to look at? (saw is 4 years old, gets light use for firewood and generally still runs well)

Thanks

I’m not a stihl expert but I did once have an ms211 pretty much the same machine as your 181. It used to make a tinny sound when the caps in the exhaust that cover the bolt holes we’re loose and they used to rattle. I would also just make sure the exhaust studs are still tight. If it’s only had light use I wouldn’t imagine it been anything serious I hammered mine and it was a an excellent little saw.

If if not I’m sure someone will help out

Hi, at a wild guess I'd say the exhaust bolts are loose, I had similar tinny sound from my 250 once & noticed they'd worked loose.

Edit: whilst I was doing that I opened up the holes in the little baffle box too :D

Where are you? Perhaps one of our resident techs may help out?

Reckon it is time all members listed the county they are based in, it may help when asking for saw technical advice then someone local could help out.                                                                                                                                                                                                                          You may be in the next village...who knows!

Good idea Spud... I'm just outside Glasgow if that helps anyone (there is a handy enough Stihl dealer just near where I park for work)

Thanks for the other suggestions - its due to come inside this week to be sharpened in front of the TV (-3 in the garage tonight, I'm not sitting inactive in there for half an hour!) - so will check the exhaust then

No good for me either,  too far away.   My location info is in my profile already, although Essex is a big place thinking about it. ;)
