Both of those went wrong, as they both sheared off the stump and went sideways. Way too much lean, and not enough control.

Those little stoggles can be harder to fell than full trees sometimes.  I have had many hinge over only to stick at a 45 degree angle.  Then when cutting more they have skewed to the side.
