Mentioned a while back about seeing wooden tar bricks for roads in a thread.

saw these today from the same stretch of road being dug up again.

must be a hundred years old and not in bad condition.

What a brilliant idea ! I can see that the sound deadening potential with this road cover would be amazing - just wouldn't want to ride the motorbike on them ! K

I do remember my dad telling me about these.  Our local town high st was dug up in the 30s and he said it was made from wooden blocks covered in tar.

These are in hove/Brighton

near the station.

Didnt have time to examine really as the digger driver was working.

Cool, they seem to have stood the test of time.

A mate of mine dipped some wooden fence posts in tar, ( the part that were buried) I laughed and thought it won't make much difference......... Those posts/fence are still standing twenty odd years on.

As a kid in Devon, I always wondered why the old cottages were all white except for a black band 2 feet high all round the base.

They painted over the tar.

primitive but effective damproofing. Some of the cottages were 400+ years old.

Second para 'Tramcars & Track'

Interesting, I'm 'into' old methods of transport, canals, trains, trams, I know, a bit sad.

do you know if these tar bricks were used nation wide or were they a local thing to Brighton?
