Hitting rosemary hard?

Anyone have any experience with cutting rosemary back pretty hard? My in laws have a sizable one which keeled over under the weight of snow a fews years back, and its gone from up against the fence to invading the narrow garden. It's about 1.5m tall and maybe 2m wide, with the stem/root right to one side (rather than in the middle).

I'd like to cut back about half the width, not too fussed about the top though, maybe stake it back more upright too. Will an otherwise healthy rosemary deal with this OK? Will it sprout from the stem (40mm ish diameter) if it's exposed to the light by the pruning?

Thanks in advance...
