Reducing fume inhalation and other toxics at work.

Don't know about any one else but feel like I breath in quite alot of fumes throughout the working day. If it's not from chainsaws and the like it's from diesel machines. Pretty hard to avoid as wind generally blows fumes about.

 

People say it's a healthy job working outside- no doubt it is in some aspects- but reckon I breathe more fumes than the average office worker.

 

What can you do?

 

I try simple things like stop the truck when I'm hitching up a trailer and take a deep breathe if I know I'm about to get a lung full- switchinbnon a machine etc.

 

It's hard not to get too neurotic about the whole thing but at the same time want to avoid where possible.

 

It doesn't just stop at fumes- wood dust, bonfire smoke, chain oil mist. Yeah i don't think our job is healthy in the slightest!

Not sure what can be done really. Switching to Aspen i one obvious step. I try to keep my mouth closed most of the time when im cutting, that doesnt stop you inhaling stuff through your nose though!

Also I have been far more conscious of it this year as I have had real problems breathing. Seem to be on top of that now though thankfully

Same mate- 10 years ago I just didn't think about it but prevention is better than cure as they say.

 

Short of walking around with a respirator mask- I think we just have to take simple precautions where poss.

Did they say that fumes where likely the cause of your breathing problems- if you don't mind me asking?

They listened to my lungs, said they were fine....did a blow test which showed i had a lung age of 59, then gave me an inhaler....not a very thorough examination really. They did do a blood test that came back fine too.

Pretty sure it was just the rape. Im fine now. going to go or a checkup next week as I have a day off, see if I can score better on the blow test for my own piece of mind

I'm very interested in a good mask. The sawdust that comes off a circular saw is so fine. It's balancing comfort with safety.

Iv literally just ordered a draper twin filter mask of amazon. It gets good reviews and not bad at £26.99.

 

I did think about full face mask but have ordered goggles seperatly so I don't always have to wear them.

 

Been cutting a few telegraph poles up today and no proper mask until customer lent me one. Will always keep on in truck now for these kind of occasions.
