Stump grinders

Hi All,

 

Looking for a bit of advise.

 

Ive been looking at getting either a Predator 460 or a Carlton SP2010 stump grinder. Both have similar characteristics but Carlton cutter head looks more substantial and efficient?

 

If anyone has worked with both machines and would suggest a better investment, your help would be greatly appreciated.

I would seriously consider the Bandit HB20 also. A bit more money but a lot more machine.

All of the above machines are 'Hip-busters' and put serious strain on the operator! Sure, they have their place for narrow access jobs, but very few jobs have less than 3 Foot access. Far better to get a hydraulic controlled stand behind machine where only your thumbs can get tired! I have several machines, but the 'Hip-busters' probably only get used 5% of the time.

They are also far less efficient as they are harder to control. They cannot compete with the smooth cutting control of hydraulic drive of a similar powered machine.

I think the percentage of 3 ft access depends on the area you work.

In Worthing, which is heavily built up I'd say 80% of our jobs are 2'6'' max gate width. A 'full' hydraulic machine is better but it would depend on how many of your jobs it can reach.

It's alot more money in fact.

10'500 plus vat against 6'500 plus vat for the 460.

I don't think you get much more machine though except in weight.

The bandit is getting towards silly money. I'd look at the Jo beau b24-100 if was buying new at the moment. Goes down to 25 inches with extra wheels for stability when using it and has a hydraulic sweep so no more moving the machine back and forth manually, believe they are around 9k plus vat

Also £10500+vat, we could take 150kgs off, remove the hydraulic drive & make electric, remove the hydraulic brakes & put the 10p piece sized brake on, make it wider & remove the dual wheels, remove the 5yr build warranty, not include delivery & spare teeth etc etc. Be a lot cheaper then but everyone would ring me not to buy one but to tell me they are rubbish.

I am not knocking the HB20 it is a good grinder, but why has the cost increased so much? we paid around £6,500 plus vat in December 2011?

 

I wish my rates had gone up by that percentage?
