Willow dieback

Hi,

 

Just wandering if anyone could recommend anything worth reading for tree root contamination.

 

I have been to look at a willow tree which is in decline and the client has thought it to be down to the disposal of spirit based paints. I'm not sure but was interested to have a look into it.

Guess you need to establish whether contamination (poisoning) has actually occurred in the first instance by getting a 'soil sample / analysis' done (see https://www.forestry.gov.uk/fr/soilanalysis )

 

Also worth having a look at Chapter 6 and Table B2 of BS3998:2010

Check if there are mains services near roots ( leaking gas or sewage is very bad news ) or factory / spray shop workings nearby ?? K

Thanks I will have a read through the standard.

 

The drainage nearby runs into a soak-away which is apparently directly beneath the tree. That's where the idea of poisoning came from, with paint being poured into the soak-away drainage.

Water mains can caus eproblems too. We had to remove a cypress which went brown over about four weeks. It turned out the water main in the road had been leaking. The main was fixed the day before we removed the tree.

 

Loads of bizarre possibilities.
