In august last year the leaves started with black spots, the bark began peeling and splitting and berries all fell off. The tree this year is showing no signs of growing so any ideas of the problem would be welcome.

Whenever I've seen rowan die with bark peeling that that, honey fungus rhizomorphs are usually in soil around the roots, and fruiting the next autumn or a few years later. Not sure if the honey is the cause of death, or taking advantage of the already stressed tree though...

Yup-shooting in the dark there - unless you got gas main / sewage main leak under neath- leaking , but then plant die back would be widespread n smelly , k

Bark looks shot and they aren't very long lived. The future doent look too rosey. First guess would armillaria but quite a few things might cause the bark death I would imagine. Phyt'z?
