A safety razor is miles better than the cartridge type rubbish. And work out cheaper in the long run.

A decent shave cream is well worth the money, the best i have ever had is Baume.Be, about £20 but it lasts for months, only need to used about 2 pea size amounts and the lather is unreal!

The use of a shaving brush really helps.

Yes owning and looking after a straight / cut throat razor isn't cheap... you need good ultra fine sharpening stones and strops and paste to get the edge right, sharpening is a skill in its self to learn along side shaving.

I have up to from 800 to 12,000 grit stones for edge setting and polishing, then up to 30,000 paste for stropping and final leather strop.

If any one has a cut throats that needs sharpening, please pm me, i'm happy to help.

I also sharpen kitchen, pocket and hunting knives to a shaving razor sharp edge!

Blimey, thats some cool shaving gear. Can't have been cheap? To my mind the move blades there are in these latest fad Gillettes etc., the more skin comes off ya face..not so good

I dread to think, then the price of the stones to boot, collected over a good number of years, always had a big fascination with cut throats razors

and knives haha

I have a shavette I was going to practice with but sliced myself open first time is used it so went back to the double edge safety. How long did it take you to master using the straight edge?

it's took me 6 - 7 month to get a decent shave, learning which way your beard grows and which best way to pull the skin to get a real close shave a bit longer.

it's a very slow process.... i recon about 2 years to get fully proficient and good results consistently

I wondered about the shavette, don't think I'll bother.

Used the DB for the first time last night, what a difference. Even using normal shaving foam, no soap yet, no rash or redness at all this morning. I'm converted.

I used the shavette once and I'll try again when I have time and patience. I also love a good straight blade shave (head and face) when I'm in the US as a treat. Like a pamper session for men, hot towels, shave oil etc.

Honestly, invest in some decent cream and a brush and you won't know yourself. Someone mentioned proraso earlier in the thread which gets heaps of good reviews and there's several other top notch creams and balms. Personally I use Taylor of old bond street but there are several good ones. They last a good while so not so expensive in the long run.

If anybody has any advice on Razor burn(rash) on knows of any potions that will farm it please inform me.

I like having 0 stubble but it's so bad I use a beard trimmer now as can't put up with the burn and it looks awful.

Try shaving at night and rub olive oil in (so you don't look too greasy) after,

a lot of chemical based stuff just aggravates razor burn. If you want to be fancy put a few drops of proper sandalwood oil in and mix it
