An opportunity to contribute thoughts to the consultation process....

"...Boost for motorists as government proposes no MOT test for first 4 years..."

Maybe a first MoT test should be set by mileage rather than years? A vehicle that has done high mileage for 4 years is more likely to benefit from a test than a 4 year old low mileage vehicle... Just a first thought on initial reading. Lucky there are "expert" civil servants looking at the issue....

They'll probably wait and see what the public suggest, then pay a bundle to a consultant to tell them how to do their job, then takes ages to actually make a decision and deliver it, then discover they've got it completely wrong, then go to the palace for a CBE!

to my knowledge, here in NI, the first MOT is already at 4 years.

I would however like to see the MOT, only every other year, assuming it is/was as through as our current NI Government run and staffed MOT.

As I also understand, is the already case in other parts of Europe.

Not by the local garage.

Apart from the management of regulating it, I can't see how tying the test to a timeframe rather than a mileage can be anything other than illogical.

Age can be just as harsh on a car as use. Leave a car for a few years undriven and the breaks, tyres etc can well be badly damaged. IIRC there's also been studies that say many of the first time fails are problems the vehicle has had since new. Having said that a car that's racked up 100,000+ miles within 4 years might need looking at earlier than one that's done 30,000.

Works here, you want a copper getting in your car to check the mileage?

Mick, rather a Rozzer than a VATMan!! But neither out of preference!!

Paul, good point about standing idle. I had to google what IIRC means! Bit embarrassed! Seen if quite often but never knew!!!
