Well I got the shaft out with a bit of heat. This old winch has been much abused. There is hardly a bit of metal on it that hasn't been bent or welded. So I was not too surprised to find the shaft was visibly bent.

 

I turned a new shaft and the new coupling arm arrived this morning.

It is now all back together and I look forward to getting it back in the woods to try it out.

I bought the winch from Chef fins auctions as an unsold lot for under £300. I think it will do me well.
