I lived in Malvern for 5 years & never heard that phrase in that context, however in the main Malverners are hippies so he may just have been stoned!

 

 

That made me chuckle. I can little imagine anyone less likely to be stoned as my friend the charity director. Unless discounting mead, you can get high on honey.

I know an auld feller who likes to stagger between pubs - and can usually be found leaning sideways against the wall of the last establishment he patronised , while he awaits his chauffeur (any random person with a car and an hour to kill, who wants to earn a tenner the hard way).

 

Anyway, to come to the point - if you ask the chap how's it going he will invariably reply: "Whooo! The drink is a bad dose!"

I worked with an old Norfolk fellow , waistcoat , jacket and cloth cap.

We were doing a shitty job one day , not long after I had left school.

It was hot and back aching work.

He stood up ,shifted his cap , wiped his brow and looked me in the eye and said

" I shall be glad when I have had enough of this".
