Satellite broadband

Has anyone had any experience with satellite broadband where fibre is not available?

Having a look at the options, it appears that some funding may be available subject to T&Cs and just wondered if anyone in the rural areas had considered it or experienced it?

Any plusses or minuses and any recommends for service providers appreciated.

Hi

I connected a business to a satellite a few years ago, it worked well but:

1. the equipment was quite expensive

2. It was very 'lagging' in that it took a little time to process website clicks, this is due to the distance between earth & satellite. However, if your existing connection is poor then this may be less noticable.

I suspect the routing kit is much cheaper now & some of the lag may have been removed by composite soultions where requests are sent via conventional broadband & data is downloaded via the satellite link

The problem with satellite is, as said above, that your ping (response time) is higher than normal broadband because the information has to travel so much further. Unless you game it shouldn't be a problem as it's only a. 8 second delay on average from memory.

We use wireless broadband which means installing a box outside the house but has no ping issues. Ours comes from resq but you would have to find someone closer, as a comparison ours was 1k to install but covered by the grant and costs £24pm for 12mbps unlimited although there's faster, more expensive packages.

You can spend time maximising a low speed, three areas to look at are removing the bell wire from your phone socket, fitting a replacement face plate and getting a router where the SNR can be adjusted.

I managed to go from 2Mbs up to 4Mbs.....not much but it is fast around here:001_rolleyes:
