Advice on ash tree

Ive been asked to clear some small trees at my sons school for a a nature area , gardening etc . Theres a small ash in the middle which the teacher informs me she wants to keep . The tree is only about 35 foot with a slight lean but theres a 4 inch opening in the bark which runs right up the main stem which is showing signs of something burrowing in the wood . The tree looks quite healthy otherwise apart from a dead branch at the top of the missing bark . Should the tree be felled due to the location and is not been the best of specimens or is it only something minor ? If pics will help il try to post some asap cheers !

why remove the whole tree?

 

get up there remove the dead branch and monitor it for the next year or so and asses the whole tree condition, make a brief report of the tree condition say every 6 months and write it down . One dead branch dosn`t mean it will fall over the next wind we get!

 

If the tree was totally dead it will probally stay stood up for years.

 

Have a close look along every main road you go along see how many dodgie trees are there with hundreds of vehicles passing under them.

but for people to remove it without even looking at it is a bit hastie. I am sure the tree will survive even with the main leader removed, being ash it will throw a bit of growth , that will be a good indicator to the health of the whole tree:thumbup1:

Pics are needed to give a clear response. Nevertheless, what is the tree vitality like, how has the tree reacted to the damaged area. Reaction growth/wound wood formation...???
