If the chain heats up when in use, like if the teeth are blunt (not a problem with my saws) it will stretch and you then tighten the chain. When the chain cools, it shrinks and puts mad stress on the bearing. Thats the theory anyway.

Bunt chains do stretch a little because if the extra mechanical effort and you are correct that heat is the problem but its heat in the guide bar that causes the problem.

The shape of the bar and the coefficient of expansion means that it expands more than the chain and its this that causes the chain to run tight and stretch.

I don't understand this?

Normally a larger diameter (the chain) would expand more than a smaller one (the bar).

Isn't this why a chain goes slack, when both bar and chain get heated?

I thought the theory was that when both receive the same amount of heat, the chain will expand more (coz larger) and thus contract more again upon cooling.

They are the same material so the expansion will be the same relative to each other and will only be influenced by material thickness. Just because the chain goes round the circumference of the bar doesn't mean it has more volume than the bar, its about the shape.

Chains that have been run on a heated bar often go slack because they deform (stretch) a little at each and every link, the bar is a homogenous unit and can only return to its "cool" dimension
