I am looking for a decent lathe at a sensible cost so some advice on makes please. I would like to turn some large lumps of wood into something useful.

Build you're own... this bowl is about 2' in diameter.

What sort of size?

Realy nice work. How long have you been turning? I have recently started and am wondering how long it will take before I get good enough to do the kinda stuff your doing. Thanx

I haven't really been turning that long a few years maybe, theres still alot to learn as with everything.

To the Glos and Worcs boys on here Tewkesbury Saw company used to keep a good range of turning tools, chucks lathes etc. They would probably help you with a joinery shop to thickness you planks too.If you still struggle come back to me and I will make some enquiries,

do you know roughly the diameter of the drive & driven pulleys you have used?? iv been toying with the idea of building one!! another job to do!!!!!!!!

~4" & 8", although the pulley size is relative, it's the ratio that is important, 2:1 here. My lathe is driven with an inverter for speed control, as 2:1 from a standard 4 pole induction motor will run at ~700rpm too fast for big 2' diameter lumps...

If you'd like to know more, bearings, motors, etc, msg me, so not to derail Ian's thread too much.

Cheers.
