Drilling large holes in logs

Anyone got a good device for drilling 50mm plus holes in logs,to make leg sockets for lifesize rustic reindeer

Battery drill and spade bits. Mine go up to 70mm

Agree - I would auger that size on green logs, but depends on how many you are doing as it could become hard work...

I'd use auger bits for that size hole...

 

FIL uses a 2 stroke engine powered auger drill for doing similar (or even bigger) holes when repairing the quayside decking etc at Blyth Harbour.....

best to use a hole saw bit without the pilot, drill in how deep you want, then get a chisel and break it out, can then level the bottom out with a really shape chisel. that way u don't end up with a pilot hole like you do with a spade bit. only take it out if u need to though!

i've just got one for making a 90mm hole in some logs!!!

I just make a maul and used an expansive bit to bore through 8" of apple to make a hole for the shaft.

They go from 22-76mm
